In a series of four movements, the work explores notions of the desert and wilderness, utilising four different approaches to configuring spatial relationships between objects and layers of sound through their placement on fixed media and subsequent projection in concert. “Ce n’est pas le désert / qui empêche / de s’entendre / C’est lui au contraire / qui sert de / porte-voix” (Jean-Paul Kermarrec) “But the desert hears, though men do not hear, and will be transformed one day into a forest of sound” (Miguel de Unamuno) Composed in the studios of EMS, Stockholm and the University of Edinburgh, 1997-99.
