Léa Boudreau is a composer and a sound artist, and she also designs electronic circuitry and immersive environments. She creates sound, visual and interactive works that place human beings in relation to the hybrid and ambiguous creatures she designs — for example, robots with animal characteristics, reactive yet non-organic.

These works question inter-species relations (more specifically, between human and non-human beings) by considering animal and artificial life as terrains for reflection on the hierarchies that divide our world. They highlight the emotional, social and environmental issues that emerge from the encounter between capitalism, power dynamics, speciesism and various forms of supremacy.

Léa Boudreau’s work has been recognized with several grants and awards in the last few years: a master’s degree scholarship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), Dora & Avi Morrow grant and Concordia Fine Arts grant in 2021, the 2nd prize (in 2019) and 3rd prize (in 2020) at the Canadian Electroacoustic Community (CEC)’s JTTP competition, 3rd prize at the 2019 SIME competition (Lille, France), the 2019 Marcelle Award (named after Marcelle Deschênes, Faculty of Music of the Université de Montréal), and the 3rd prize in the Hugh Le Caine Award of the 2017 SOCAN Foundation Awards for Young Composers.

Her projects have been presented and performed all over the world, more recently in Melbourne, São Paulo, Montréal, Victoriaville, Belfast…

She will be in residence at OTTOsonics (Ottensheim, Austria) in fall 2023 for the creation of an interactive sound installation, and will be a lecturer in interdisciplinary arts at Concordia University (Montréal, Québec) in winter 2024.
