Everything is small in the world of watchmaking. Some pieces are so small that they are almost absolutely silent and make the eyes ache when one tries observing them. The balance spring is the master element of a watch. It is attached to the balance wheel, passing on the energy it generates, thus enabling the watch to rotate. This minuscule piece stores all the energy required for the watch to function. The balance spring is switched on when the watch is wound, the progressively distends by making the clock hand rotate for days. It is this contradiction that fascinates me. How does such a minute element possess such power? In order to create this piece, I immersed myself in my grandfather’s world. With the help of my younger cousin, an apprentice in fine watchmaking, I was able to discover parts of a world I had only got a glimpse of before.
